Supabase vs Firebase for a Next.js MVP: an honest comparison

Document store or relational Postgres? How to choose the right backend for your Next.js product without locking yourself in.

Two laptops showing database dashboards side by side

Both Supabase and Firebase can back a Next.js app. The better choice depends on how relational your data is and how much you value standard SQL.

Two different data models

Firebase is a document store: flexible, fast to start, opinionated about realtime. Supabase is Postgres: relational, SQL-first and portable.

Where Supabase shines

  • Relational data with joins and foreign keys.
  • Row-level security expressed in SQL.
  • Standard Postgres you can move anywhere.
  • Auth, storage and edge functions in one place.

Where Firebase shines

  • Realtime sync out of the box.
  • Offline-first mobile clients.
  • Deep integration with Google Cloud.

Auth and security

Supabase maps directly to Postgres roles and row-level security, which keeps authorization close to the data. Firebase uses security rules that are powerful but specific to its own syntax.

The practical call

If your product is mostly relational and you want SQL, choose Supabase. If you need realtime and offline-first on mobile, Firebase is a strong fit.

Choose the model that matches your data, not the one with the better marketing page.
