Shipping React Native apps with Expo: a practical workflow

From local development to store builds — a repeatable workflow for small teams building cross-platform apps.

Expo removes most of the friction from React Native, but a smooth release still depends on a workflow you follow every time.

Develop against a real build

Use a development build early so you are testing the same runtime your users will get. It catches native configuration problems long before release week.

Keep a single source of configuration

  • Store identifiers, versions and environment values in one place.
  • Keep secrets out of the app bundle entirely.
  • Derive build numbers automatically instead of editing them by hand.

Test on real devices, not just simulators

Performance, gestures and layout all behave differently on real hardware. Test the smallest and largest screens you intend to support.

Automate the boring parts

  • Run linting, types and tests in CI on every change.
  • Build store binaries from tags, not from a laptop.
  • Keep a short release checklist for store metadata and screenshots.

None of this is exotic. The value is doing it consistently, so shipping is boring instead of stressful.

  • Expo
  • Mobile
